About magnitUDE

picture of magnitUDE in 2021

The research activities at the UDE in the field of scientific computing have been additionally “fueled” by the new high-performance computer magnitUDE since June 2016. Especially the research of the working groups of engineering sciences, chemistry and physics shall benefit from its use in the future. For example, the processes in combustion engines are simulated and insights gained for their optimization. But the new system will also enable the detailed investigation of microstructural processes during the forming of steel sheets through the use of multi-scale simulation methods.

The initial configuration with 564 compute nodes and a storrage system with 480 TB of storage was put into operation in June 2016. The funding was realized under the direction of Prof. Kempf and Prof. Schröder within the framework of the DFG program “Forschungsgroßgeräte nach Art. 91b GG” (DFG INST 20876/209-1 FUGG) .

In January 2017, magnitUDE was expanded by another 60 computing nodes. For this purpose, the financial means for the extension of the magnitUDE were acquired within the framework of the DFG large-scale equipment program associated with the DFG SFB 1242 under the direction of Prof. Kratzer and Prof. Pentcheva (DFG INST 20876/243-1 FUGG).

magnitUDE Node Types

There are three types of compute nodes, which differ only in the main memory:

  • Normal compute nodes: 64 GB main memory - node[073-564]

  • FAT compute nodes: 128 GB main memory - node[001-072]

  • SUPERFAT compute nodes: 256 GB main memory - node[565-624]

magnitUDE Interconnect

OmniPath (OPA) is used as the interconnect. Each of the OPA switches has 48 ports. A two-tier network is implemented on the magnitUDE, consisting of:

  • 16 edge switches

  • 5 spine switches
